Divorce Statistics

Tue 23rd Oct, 2018 Family Law

When couples get married, most don’t anticipate that their happy union will ever end. Unfortunately, divorce statistics remind our Stockton, CA clients that, although divorce rates have lowered in recent years, the odds of a marriage ending in divorce are still pretty high.

Divorce proceedings can be highly emotional and messy affairs. It is hard not to take things personally when dividing assets and discussing issues like child custody and spousal support.

The experienced family law attorneys, such as those at McKinley, Conger, Jolley & Galarneau, LLP, can assist clients throughout their divorce proceedings to ensure that things are done as fairly and amicably as possible.

How Prevalent Is Divorce?

In recent years, marriage and divorce rates in the United States have gone down. Although divorce rates are lower than they once were, it is still estimated that nearly half of all marriages will eventually end in divorce or separation.

Here are some statistics regarding divorce rates in the United States:

  • The United States has the sixth highest divorce rate in the world
  • There is a divorce in the United States approximately every 13 seconds, which amounts to nearly 2.5 million divorces each year

Who Is Most Likely to Divorce?

Data shows that certain people are more likely to divorce. Some of the factors that may influence a person’s likelihood of divorce include age, income level, the age when the couple was married, how long the couple has been married, and whether one of the spouses has been married before.

These statistics highlight how certain factors influence divorce rates:

  • Around 41 percent of first marriages end in divorce
  • Approximately 60 percent of second marriages end in divorce
  • On average, a divorce takes place after seven to eight years of marriage
  • The average age at which a person goes through their first divorce is 30
  • 60 percent of people who divorce are between the ages of 25 and 39
  • Divorce is more prevalent among couples who make less than $20,000 annually than it is among adults making more than $75,000 annually
  • 48 percent of individuals who get married before the age of 18 get divorced within 10 years
  • The divorce rate among those who get married between the age of 20 and 25 is 60 percent, while those who get married after 25 are 24 percent less likely to get divorced
